GROSSE POINTE, Mich. — Authorities were able to track down the young man who dropped off a newborn baby boy at a local hospital Thursday morning. The man led police to the mother of the child.

The young man claimed that he found the baby abandoned between two garbage cans in Grosse Pointe. He later admitted that he made up the story out of fear, Local 4 reported.

He reportedly brought the baby in to Bon Secours Hospital at 3 a.m., then disappeared. Late Thursday afternoon, police were able to track the man down.

The mother said that she promises to give the child's medical information to the hospital for its future adoptive parents. Under the new state law, the mother will face no criminal charges because she brought the baby to a hospital.
