Teacher Gets 6 Years In Jail For Sex With 13-Year-Old

Originally published by KETV.com, September 29, 2008

OMAHA, Neb. -- A former math teacher was sentenced Monday to six years in jail for fleeing to Mexico to have sex with her 13-year-old student.

Kelsey Peterson, 26, also faces five years of supervised release after the jail sentence.

Peterson was the boy's math teacher at Lexington Middle School during the 2005-2006 school year. They began sexual relations in November 2006.

She was accused of having sex with the boy multiple times starting when he was 12 years old.

The two disappeared in October after the district's superintendent confronted Peterson with allegations of inappropriate conduct with the boy. She was arrested a week later in Mexicali, Mexico, after the boy made a cell phone call to his family.

Peterson was arrested by Mexican authorities and transported back to Nebraska.

"I want to move on with my life and make it better," Peterson said Monday in court. "I'm here to take responsibility for what I did."

U.S. District Judge Laurie Smith Camp said Peterson is not a sexual predator, but that she lacks maturity and sound judgement.
